  1.                  THE PROGRADE SYSTEM -- STARTUP INSTRUCTIONS

  5.         The PROGRADE SYSTEM is a full-featured grading program for
  6.      educators. It was designed by an educator and has been rigorously
  7.      tested by "non-computer expert" educators to meet their specific
  8.      needs. A full description of the capabilities of the program are
  9.       found in the user's manual (PROGRADE.TXT) on the utility disk.
  10.  
  11.         FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THIS FILE TO SET UP THE PROGRAM!
  12.  
  13.         SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: DOS 2.1 or higher, 640 K, 2 drives and
  14.           a printer are recommended; program is hard drive ready
  15.  
  16.         DISKS: There are two disks.  Do NOT combine disks, as both
  17.      separate disks are required.  A blank formatted disk is required
  18.         for your own data.  If you have the SAME size disks you may
  19.        duplicate the disks with DISKCOPY.  Do NOT write protect the
  20.      disks, as the program writes to each disk.  If you have different
  21.         disk sizes, you can use the XCOPY command with /S option to
  22.      duplicate the disks to preformatted disks.  You are not required
  23.                to duplicate the disks to use them, however.

  25.       MANUALS: There are TWO manuals to print from the UTILITY disk.
  26.      The FIRST is the HANDS-ON TUTORIAL (TUTORIAL.TXT).  It will guide
  27.      you through each step of the system, step by step.  The second is
  28.        a REFERENCE USER'S MANUAL (PROGRADE.TXT) to be used AFTER you
  29.      have used the TUTORIAL.  The next paragraph explains how to print
  30.                 if you do not already have a printed copy.

  34.                                     STARTUP
  35.  
  36.      To learn to use the PROGRADE SYSTEM, insert the PROGRAM disk in drive
  37.     A, and type BEGIN.  From there, you can print the TUTORIAL.  Then, USE
  38.       THE TUTORIAL to guide you step by step through the program series.
  39.        THIS WILL TEACH YOU NOT ONLY HOW TO USE THE SYSTEM, BUT WHAT IT'S
  40.                           POWERFUL CAPABILITIES ARE.

  42.     1.  All users users should use the BEGIN program to print the tutorial
  43.      first, then leave the BEGIN program and use the tutorial as you read
  44.                                       it.
  45.  
  46.        2.  After using the tutorial, hard drive users should install the
  47.                              program (see below).
  48.  
  49.       3.  Once you have used the tutorial (and installed the program if a
  50.      hard drive user), then you should return to the BEGIN program to set
  51.                                  user options.

  55.      DO NOT USE OR INSTALL THE PROGRADE SYSTEM UNTIL YOU HAVE PRINTED
  56.                           AND USED THE TUTORIAL.

  59.       The REFERENCE USER'S MANUAL can also be printed from the BEGIN
  60.            program.  You will receive a printed copy of this manual
  61.           with your registration and request for an updated version.
  62.  
  63.       ERROR CODES: A list is found in the tutorial and in the user's
  64.                               manual as well.

  68.                             HARD DRIVE INSTALLATION
  69.  
  70.       Most hard drive users use drive C.  If you do, then to install the
  71.     program on the hard drive, insert the program disk in drive A and type
  72.      HARD <return> Follow the instructions that you will see.  BE SURE TO
  73.             USE THE TUTORIAL BEFORE YOU INSTALL TO THE HARD DRIVE.

  75.      If you are REinstalling the program, you may see some error codes
  76.     appear on screen.  These are only because your subdirectory already
  77.         exists on your hard drive.  You may ignore these messages.
  78.  
  79.        OPTIONAL HARD DRIVE SETUP: IF YOU USE ANOTHER LETTER FOR YOUR
  80.          HARD DRIVE (SUCH AS DRIVE F), THEN BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE
  81.        PROGRAM, PLACE THE PROGRAM DISK IN DRIVE A AND TYPE BEGIN AND
  82.       CHOOSE "HARD DRIVE LETTER".  THIS PROCEDURE WILL ALTER THE HARD
  83.         DRIVE LETTER THROUGHOUT THE PROGRAM SERIES.  AFTER THIS IS
  84.       COMPLETED, LEAVE THE BEGIN PROGRAM, AND THEN TYPE HARD <return>
  85.           TO BEGIN THE INSTALLATION PROCESS TO THE CORRECT DRIVE.

  89.                          FILES ON THE UTILITY DISK
  90.  
  91.       There are sample grade files on the utility disk.  The tutorial
  92.       will show you how to use them.  Also found on the utility disk
  93.                     are the manuals referred to above.

  95.        There are several additional information files on the utility
  96.        disk.  Use a word processor or the DOS TYPE command to view:
  97.          AUTHOR.TXT which will give you some ideas about using the
  98.        PROGRADE SYSTEM positively in the classroom, QUOTES.TXT which
  99.      contains some positive, motivating quotes, and COMMENTS.TXT which
  100.        contains ideas for comments to use on your progress reports.

  102.        A complete list of all files on the disks is contained in the
  103.       file named FILES found on the utility disk.  You can look at it
  104.               with a word processor or the DOS TYPE command.

  108.                               FILE CONVERSION
  109.  
  110.        It is imperative that you use the CONVERT program found on the
  111.     utility disk to convert any data files that were created on versions
  112.       released before 8-15-91.  If you do not do this, your data files
  113.                                will NOT work!

  115.     Place the utility disk in drive A and type CONVERT.  Have your data
  116.              disk handy and follow the instructions on screen.
  117.  
  118.       DO NOT TRY TO USE THE OLD VERSION WITH NEW DATA FILE OR THE OLD
  119.       FILES WITH THE NEW VERSION.  YOU MUST USE THE CONVERT PROGRAM TO
  120.                      CONVERT THE OLD DATA FILES FIRST.

  130.     improvement in their performance because of the prompt feedback
  131.      that the SYSTEM can provide. Parents may praise you for the
  132.     thorough reports that you can give. And your family and friends
  133.        will rejoice -- no more end of the term "grading" -- it's
  134.             always done and up to date with little effort.

  136.      Please -- the author worked long and hard writing and having this
  137.       program field tested.  He is an educator like yourself, and is
  138.         asking for you to be fair.  Your registration will be truly
  139.                                appreciated.

  141.      Please -- it is a violation of copyright law to use this program
  142.       without registering.  And even more-- it's just not fair to the
  143.       author.  Think about how much benefit YOU get weekly from this
  144.      program!  Registered users who update their program will receive
